Proxy verification

How to Test Proxy Anonymity and IP Leakage

A successful connection does not prove anonymity. A useful check compares the direct connection with the proxied connection and inspects headers, DNS behavior, and stability.

Understand anonymity levels

Transparent proxy

The destination can identify proxy usage and may receive the client's original IP in forwarding headers. This is unsuitable when the goal is to avoid exposing the client IP.

Anonymous proxy

The original IP is not exposed, but headers or network behavior can reveal that a proxy is in use.

Elite or high-anonymity proxy

The original IP is not exposed and common proxy-identifying headers are absent. This label should be treated as a test result at a point in time, not a permanent guarantee.

Run a direct baseline

First request a trusted IP-check endpoint without a proxy and record the public IPv4/IPv6 result. Then repeat the same request through the proxy. The proxied result should differ from the direct result and match the expected proxy exit address.

# Direct
curl --silent https://ippool.cc/ip?text

# Through an HTTP proxy
curl --silent --proxy http://IP:PORT https://ippool.cc/ip?text

Inspect forwarding headers

Use a diagnostic endpoint you control to inspect headers such as Forwarded, X-Forwarded-For, Via, and vendor-specific client-IP headers. The presence of a header is not automatically a vulnerability, but it must not contain the original client address when anonymity is required.

Check DNS and IPv6 behavior

Some applications resolve hostnames locally before connecting to a proxy. This can expose DNS queries outside the proxy path. IPv6 may also bypass an IPv4-only configuration. Test with the exact application and network stack used in production rather than relying on a browser-only checker.

Test stability, not just one response

Repeat checks over time and record latency, errors, exit IP changes, and header changes. Use HTTPS destinations so content remains encrypted between the client and destination through an HTTP CONNECT tunnel.

Important: proxy anonymity does not replace TLS, application authentication, secure secret storage, or legal authorization.

Use continuously scored proxies

IPPool validates availability and scores endpoints before API delivery.
