Web Scraping Proxy Configuration Guide
Reliable scraping depends on conservative request rates, clear timeouts, bounded retries, and correct session handling—not simply changing IP addresses.
Confirm that collection is permitted
Before sending automated requests, review the target's terms, robots policy, applicable law, and data licensing requirements. Prefer an official API when one exists. Do not use proxies to bypass authentication, access controls, or explicit restrictions.
Design the request pipeline
Separate proxy retrieval, proxy selection, HTTP requests, parsing, and storage. This makes failures observable and prevents a parser error from being misclassified as a proxy failure.
- Retrieve a small pool through the proxy API.
- Assign one proxy to each independent task or session.
- Set separate connect and total request timeouts.
- Record the outcome and temporarily cool down failing endpoints.
- Refresh the pool when healthy capacity becomes low.
Use safe retry rules
Retry network timeouts, connection resets, and explicit proxy failures. Avoid retrying every HTTP status: a 401, 403, or validation error usually requires investigation rather than aggressive repetition. Apply exponential backoff with random jitter and a strict maximum attempt count.
delay = min(base_delay * (2 ** attempt), max_delay)
delay = delay + random_jitter
stop after a small, fixed number of attempts
Keep sessions consistent
When a workflow uses cookies, shopping carts, or several dependent requests, keep the same proxy and cookie jar for that session. Rotating the IP in the middle of a stateful workflow can trigger security checks or invalidate the session.
Measure quality correctly
Track proxy connection rate, end-to-end success rate, median and tail latency, response size, and parser success. Remove secrets and personal data from logs. A proxy with low latency but poor target success may be less useful than a slightly slower stable endpoint.
Build a verified proxy pool
Use IPPool filtering and API delivery as one layer in a responsible collection pipeline.
